We must leave no stone unturned in
keeping our environment green. It is an age old tradition of the East to
live in peace and conformity with our environment. Unfortunately
certain evil practices in the present age are responsible for the
degradation of our environment. We must struggle against these evil
practices and work tooth and nail to save our environment. These ideas
were expressed by Prof Dr. Muhammad Faheem Malik Director faculty of
Sciences who was the Chief guest at a one day Symposium on ‘World Earth
Day’ at University of Gujrat (UOG) Hafiz Hayat.
This symposium was organized by the UOG
Green Society of the Department of Environmental Sciences. The theme of
Year 2012 ‘Mobilize the Earth’ was the focus of the symposium. In her
welcome address to the first session of the symposium Miss SairaMunawar
Coordinator Dept. of Environmental Sciences welcomed all and sundry and
intimated an overview of the program. Students Mr. AdilSikandar and Mr.
Sheikh SiddiqueShahid from BS 4th Semester discussed general
problems affecting Earth. Miss Ayesha Siddiqua Lecturer Department of
Environmental Sciences made a very effective prersentation on
‘Environmental Issues and their Impact on Planet Earth.’ . Documentaries
were screened to mobilize the youth. Mr. Ali Shan BS 6th Semester and Nauman Ashraf (BS 4th
Semester) presented their research on disadvantages of plastic bags and
the introduction of Reusable Eco bags. At the end the panelists Prof
Dr.Faheem Malik, Dr. Muhammad Danish, Dr. Khizar Hayat, Dr. Abdul
MajidSandhu, Miss Ayesha Siddiqua and Mr. Raza – e Mustafa answered
different questions of the audience. The second session was focused on
the subtheme ‘Get rid of Plastic Bags’. Dr. Freshullah Director Social
Sciences was the Chief Guest. Ms. KholaSikandar Lecturer Department of
Environmental Sciences presented authentic solution of plastic bags in
her “Alternates of polythene Bags”. Dr. UmerRasheed Assistant Professor
Department of Biotechnology made a very interesting lecture on
‘Biodegradation of Polythen Bags’. Besides a large number of students,
and faculty, Dr. Iftikhar Head Department of Mathematics, Dr. Omer
Rasheed (Department of Biochemistry) Miss SairaMunawar and Miss
KhoulaSikandar from Department of Environmental Sciences participated in
the seminar.
