Art is a representation of the real. It is closely related to
spiritualism. Since the concept of reality has always been changing in
history so art forms and styles have also been changing from time to
time. Art is based on the beautiful and exhumes beauty in its artifacts.
The primeval value of art is beauty. It is not divorced from
socio-cultural make up of a society. It is rather an original,
innovative or creative perception of reality. Primitive art like the
Greeks is immortal. It is because of the fact that primitive man, lived
in direct company of Nature and was at all times exposed to its grandeur
and majesty that is why it could create models of art which like nature
are ever living. Again at the age of Renaissance, it was primitive art
which inspired great geniuses like Dante, Leonarda Da Vinchi and the
European consciousness at large, which is one of the best periods of
human creativity.

Another aspect and source of great art
is metaphysics. Man is a mystery and this mystique is the result of
divine element permeated in the make up of human beings. Spiritual
values of man are an eternal source of great art. Postmodernism the
cultural logic of late capitalism has disseminated materialism, cheap
consumerism and fetishized objects and products instead of voicing out
human concerns. The great age of humanism is over and man has been
exhausted of all spiritual values and dehumanized that is why great art
is not coming up. These ideas were expressed by Kamil Khan Mumtaz in the
school of Art Design and Architecture (SADA) at the University of
Gujrat (UOG) while lecturing on the topic “Spirituality in Art and
Architecture”.
